Theatre of Consumption is a hand-made surreal collage examining appetite, labour, and the spectacle of modern consumption.
A vast, open mouth becomes a theatre, with theatre-goers seated inside as both audience and participants. In front of them, scenes of industrial food production unfold, while a city skyline glows beyond, collapsing the distance between consumption, labour, and performance. The image invites reflection on who consumes, who produces, and how these roles are staged and observed.
By merging vintage photography with bold contemporary imagery, the piece reframes eating as a theatrical act shaped by repetition, power, and desire. The mouth functions as both stage and enclosure, amplifying themes of hunger, control, and collective ritual.
Hand-cut imagery is carefully layered to create depth and contrast, encouraging slow looking and repeated discovery. Familiar scenes are recontextualised into something uncanny, where nourishment becomes spectacle and the everyday feels monumental.
Originally created as a physical collage using hand-cut materials, Theatre of Consumption is reproduced as a high-quality art print that preserves the texture, colour, and intensity of the original artwork. All works are created by Charlotte Wellings, the artist behind Realm of Pixels.
