Salt and Bone is a hand-made surreal collage exploring survival, adaptation, and the uneasy relationship between shelter and landscape.
A skull-shaped dwelling emerges from an arid terrain, its hollowed features transformed into windows and doors. Around it, fragments of land, sea, and creature collide: fish drift through flooded ground, eggs rest in precarious nests, and a masked figure stands watchful, caught between protection and exposure. The scene feels both post-apocalyptic and mythic, suggesting a world shaped by endurance rather than comfort.
Hand-cut imagery is carefully layered to create tension between organic forms and human construction. Shifts in scale and environment blur boundaries between land and water, refuge and ruin, prompting questions about what remains when survival becomes ritual.
Originally created as a physical collage using hand-cut materials, Salt and Bone is reproduced as a high-quality art print that preserves the texture, depth, and atmosphere of the original artwork. All works are created by Charlotte Wellings, the artist behind Realm of Pixels.
